I have read Stan Sakai's comics about the samurai rabbit Usagi Yojimbo for more than 20 years now, and still find them very enjoyable. I have also met this humble and friendly artist a number of times at various international festivals around the world. However, it was at the Small Press Expo in Stockholm 2008 that I conducted a thorough interview with him, along with Jimmy Wallin, and in conjunction with this, he drew me as the above, rogue samurai. The design was then used by Jimmy in an comics form interview for the magazine Bild & Bubbla, in which me and Jimmy fight to the death with Usagi...

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI really like the sketch / portrait Stan did for you.
Not long ago, I ran across an old blog posting by Jimmy Wallin (den 28 januari 2009 - Samurajerna anfaller!) which mentioned the Bild & Bubbla article.

Shortly after I posted a message and link concerning the blog on the Usagi Yojimbo Dojo Forum, Jimmy visited the forum and left a message...
" The first thing I find on this forum is a text about myself, how strange is that?
The picture presented above is the third page from an comic/interview that me and my co-editor fredrik did with Stan when he visited Stockholm in april 2008. If there is anyone who is interested in seeing the rest of the comic, please drop me an email and I will send you a pdf. "
I contacted Jimmy Wallin shortly after that and asked if I could post scans of the article and, hopefully, an English translation of the interview as well. He said that should be no problem, but I never heard back from him concerning the availability of a transcript of the original interview as conducted in English.
Translating the interview back into English would not be difficult, but getting a translation which accurately captures all the original nuances of the original interview is a differant matter all together, as the message from Stan Sakai concerning the translation of another interview....
" Thank you, Steve.
I like the translation. It reminds me of an episode of the old TV series News Radio, when one of the characters wrote a book that was translated into Japanese then re-translated into English. The title was changed from "Jimmy James: Corporate Lion Tamer" to "Jimmy James: Big Business Donkey Wrestler."
Cheers,Stan "
Anyways, the point of all this is I am still interested in aquiring a English transcript of the original interview which you conducted with Stan Sakai in Stockholm at the 2008 Small Press Expo to post on the Usagi Yojimbo Dojo message board for other fans of Stan Sakai's work from around the world to be able to access.
Here is a link to the post concerning the Bild & Bubbla #177 (Mars 2009) article....

Thanks again for posting the great sketch and working with Jimming Wallin on the really neat article in Bild & Bubbla.
Abayo,
Steve Hubbell

ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteGood to hear from you. Yes, you are not the only one to have asked to see this interview in English. I will talk to Jimmy again on the subject, and we'll see what happens.
Cheers!
