The second day of MoCCA has ended, and I'm exhausted but very pleased with the way things has turned out. I've had another signing session with Fantagraphics, and my book was actually sold out at the end of the show. That felt good.

I've also managed to actually walk the floor today, looking at all the books and fanzines that were for sale. This is always interesting as it says a lot about the currents in the comics culture right now. For me, the most interesting stuff was published by the big publishers, Fantagraphics of course, but also Top Shelf, Drawn & Quarterly, Abrams, Yo Books and a few more. Together they put out so many new, interesting books that it's dizzying.

There were a few really interesting fanzines as well, but for the most part, they left me cold, being derivatives of well known genres and styles.

We also managed to get together representatives from the different Nordic countries, discussing how we can improve our cooperation at MoCCA in years to come. There was a lot of energy at this meeting and a lot of good ideas, so it is looking good for the Nordic Alley at MoCCA 2013.

After the show had ended I went for dinner with friend and colleague David Gerstein, whom I hadn't met in a few years and we had, as is always the case when you eat out with David, a great meal and some good gossip about the comics business.

Right now, I'm back at the hotel room, reading some of all the books I've bought. Tomorrow I'll go shopping and sit around at cafes working, before flying home in the evening. It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it...

Today, the festival got started and the beautiful great hall of the Armory filled up with visitors.

There was a long queue hours before opening, and my personal favourite: a street playing Boba Fett, doing interpretations of Star Wars themes on an accordion.

The room filled up quickly and the heat slowly rose, along with the sound of fervent discussions about anything comics related.

The Nordic Alley was today full of participants, with tables representing Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.

Today was also time for the official Nordic panel, for which I was moderator. Representing the Nordic countries on stage were Peter Madsen (DA), Mattias Elftorp (SE), Bendik Kaltenborn (NO) and Kaisa Leka & Harri Römpötti (FI). The audience was unexpectantly big and very enthusiastic, ready with many questions at the end of the panel.

After this I did my first signing session at the Fantagraphics booth, giving me the opportunity to for the first time properly examine my new book Jewish Images in Comics, which turned out nicely thick, almost cubic. The extended softcover edition of the long since sold out Black Images in the Comics had also arrived and also looks really nice. All in all, I'm very satisfied with the results and looking forward to seeing the reviews.

Now day one of the festival is over and I am heading off to the official Fantagraphics dinner, with among others my old friend Jason, who came over here from France. Tomorrow I'll try to get time to actually look at the rest of the festival and see what gems there are to be found among all these booths.

Having arrived safely to New York late last night, I had the opportunity to spend a whole day in this buzzing city before the main event, the MoCCA Art Fest started.

I spent the day walking about, among other things visiting a comic book store, Jeff Hanley's Universe, to get a proper feel for the American comics business. The dominance of the superhero genre is rather evident.

Then I visited the MoCCA site, at the beautiful but strange Armory building. The bigger publishers were already building their booths, and lo and behold, there was my new book: Jewish Images in the Comics; just as chunky and cubic as I had imagined. Sadly Fantagraphics had only been able to secure a few copies for the festival, so I could not carry one away with me, but it felt great to hold it in my hands. More on the book tomorrow.

When I had met up with Swedish artist Mattias Elftorp (Piracy is Liberation) and we had finished building the Swedish booth, we headed back out into the city, visiting the Fresh Meat festival, where the students of The School of Visual Art were displaying their fanzines. Walking about, looking at their comics made me realize just how similar things can be, despite geographic and cultural divides, as the art they displayed felt like it could have been made by the students of my Comic Art School of Malmö.

After this we met up with the Danish group, which as usual is the biggest Nordic group at MoCCA, and had some rather good beers before heading back to the hotel. All in all, a very good start of a festival that really doesn't start until tomorrow.

Right now the students at The Comic Art School of Malmö are painting a mural on a wall at newly furbished institution in Malmö, which has comissioned us to give one of their rooms an artistic touch. It looks great, and will remain as a monument for this class for a long time.

We have lost one of the most tenacious fighters for comics in Scandinavia, and I have lost a friend. Kristiina Kolehmainen, head of Serieteket in Stockholm, has passed away. I will write a longer text for Bild & Bubbla about Kristiina and all the hard work, energy and enthusiasm that she brought to comics and to all of us who knew her. For now I will settle for sharing some photos of this wonderful lady.

Rest in peace Kristiina, you will be remembered with love and affection! I already miss you...

A new trend among Swedish comics seems to be to create trailers for upcoming graphic novels. Here are two recent ones, made to promote two Swedish graphic novels by Kim W. Andersson and Åsa Ekström respectively. Enjoy!

Kim W. Andersson has made trailers like these before. Here's an older one for his comic Love Hurts:

There was also a trailer made for the graphic novel Gängkrig 145 by Jens Lapidus and Peter Bergting, that was shown as a commercial at cinemas all over Sweden a few years ago.

Do you know of other comic trailers like these, then please let me know, as I find this fascinating.

News: Jewish Images in the Comics

It's getting closer and closer to the launch of my third book in the "Visual History" series from Fantagraphics. As many of you know by now, the topic this time is Jewish culture and Jewish History and the manuscript for Jewish Images in the Comics is by now at the publishers.

One thing that I have done for every book in this series is ask an artist to draw a special illustration for the title page inside of the book.

For Black Images in the Comics (which will be out in a new paperback edition in a few months), Patrik Norrman drew a beautiful Janus-styled portrait of the depiction of Black people, with one half showing a racist "native" with a bone through the nose, and the other half a realistically represented Black man.

For The Comics go to Hell, I asked artist Daniel Novakovic to draw a similar Janus inspired illustration with two very different ideas of what the devil might look like. Again a really beautiful illustration that captured the essence of the book.

And no, the cover illustration was not done by Novakovic, but by Jamie Hernandez, who also did an outstanding job, actually putting me on the cover in the guise of the Devil.

And now it's time for Jewish Images in the Comics. I have once again chosen a very good artist to draw an illustration, which can be seen above, again showing a racist/antisemitic half set against a realistic rendering of a Jewish man.

I am very pleased with the results, and the question I want to pose to you now is, who has drawn this image? Can you guess?

Live: Paris - La vie n'est pas pour les amateurs

As of right now, the big Swedish comics exhibition La vie n'est pas pour les amateurs (Life is not for amateurs) is on display at the Swedish Institute in Paris, and will be so until the 15th of April.

The exhibition showcases the art of ten cutting edge Swedish comics artists, viz Malin Biller, Anneli Furmark, Fabian Göranson, Joanna Hellgren, Loka Kanarp, Kolbeinn Karlsson, Henrik Lange, Knut Larsson, Joanna Rubin-Dranger and Matilda Ruta. These artists have all made comics and/or large panoramas, life-sized paper theaters, commenting on the world-famous Swedish author, fine artist, poet and alchemist August Strindberg.

Strindberg had a special relationship with Paris. It was here he fled when the pressure became too high in Sweden, when friends and enemies, family and critics became too intrusive. But it was also here that he experienced his greatest personal crisis, the one immortalized in the book Inferno, one of Swedish literature's most legendary works. France is also the center of one of the strongest and most interesting comics cultures in the world. So it is only logical that a large comics exhibition on Strindberg, set to mark the 100th anniversary of his death, is shown right here.

Live: Paris - Panel Discussion

The events planned in conjunction with the Swedish comics exhibition in Paris keep rolling on. Yesterday we held a panel discussion on Swedish comics in general and Strindberg and comics in particular. The turnout was not spectacular due to the severely cold weather (for Paris that is), but the audience was very interested and in the mingle afterwards it became obvious that there were several publishers present, clearly interested in Swedish comics. Thus, more connections to the French comics market and more probable forthcoming publishing of Swedish comics in France. Quite a good day's work, all things considered.

Live: Paris - The Grand Opening

Yesterday was the grand opening of the Swedish comics exhibition La vie n'est pas pour les amateurs, at the Swedish Institute in Paris, and it was a great success.

We started out in the afternoon with a complete walk-through of the exhibition with all the guides who will be here guiding the visitors. Me, Josefin Svenske, Anneli Furmark and Knut Larsson tried to convey as much information as possible about the exhibition and the artists represented for the guides to transmit to the general Parisian public in the months to come.

Then the official opening got going and people immediately started to pour in. There was a constant influx of visitors the whole evening and sometimes the main room got so crowded that I actually got a bit nervous for the exhibition, which is in cardboard and could easily be damaged if someone fell over a panorama or one of the characters. Of course this never happened and all things went very well, with a lot of new and interesting contacts made for the Swedish comics community. Expect many more Swedish comics artists to be published in French in the years to come.

After this, we sojourned to another beautiful room in Si:s incredible 16th century building and had a luxurious buffet with specially invited guests. Maria Ridelberg-Lemoine, deputy chief of the Swedish Institute in Paris and one of the instigators of the long journey that led to this exhibition, held a speech, thanking everybody who have been involved in the project, before we all devoured the delicious Italian buffet.

Well, that's it for now. At the moment, the exhibition is on display and will be so for almost three months. Today, Wednesday, we will also have a panel debate at 19.30 with all the artists present as well as Josefin Svenske and I, at the Swedish Institute. If you happen to be in Paris you are very welcome to come by and listen to what we have to say. The talk will be in English with translations into French.

It's getting close to the grand opening of the Swedish comics exhibition in Paris, the second showing of La Vie n'est pas pour les amateurs.

This time we are in a venerable 16th century building in the heart of Paris, courtesy of the Swedish Institute. Right now everything is a bit of a mess, but that is as it should be, considering that the opening is still several hours away.

So, the Swedish exhibition in Angoulême is over and done with. It's been a great four days, but now it's time to move on. I will travel home to Sweden, but the exhibition will go on to Paris, where it will be on display for the next three months.

Right now we are focusing on getting everything packed into the two especially built crates that accompany the exhibition. A bit sad to tear everything down, but also a relief, as this has been a long and arduous journey.

I am going to Sweden for a few days, but will return to Paris next week, when I, curator Josefin Svenske and artists Malin Biller, Anneli Furnark and Knut Larsson will take part in the grand opening. Right now, I'm very happy to be on my way home, though. Tired but very satisfied.

Swedish comics have been getting a lot of attention here in France these last few days, and the biggest splash was made by the anthology Rayon Frais, co-published by Swedish Galago and French Les Requins Marteaux. The anthology has been reviewed in the revered newspaper Liberation, and given a whole spread, with art by many Swedish artists. This has raised the awareness of this brand new anthology with cutting edge Swedish comics tremendously.

To celebrate this, there was a release party last night at the booth of Les Requins Marteaux, where enthusiastic readers were treated to vodka and "Swedish bread".

Sales have been brisk for the anthology all through the festival and I am sure that now that it is available in French, other publishers will find Swedish artists that they like and want to publish. This is definitely the start of an avalanche of Swedish comics being published in France.

We have now entered the very last day of the festival, and there is a steady stream of visitors coming to look at the Swedish exhibition, buy catalogues and books, talk about Swedish comics, look at the Swedish artists drawing or simply sit down and look at Joanna Rubin Dranger's movie.

All-in-all, everyone is very happy with the exhibition and what we have achieved this year, promoting Swedish comics on so many levels. There are already some very tangiable results of this work, which I will get back to, but for now I'll settle for sharing some photos from the last days of the exhibition.

The Swedish delegation in Angoulême is bigger than ever this year and there has also been more new contacts made than ever, of which I will report more later. We gathered the ones who had been involved in the exhibition for an official dinner at the very best restaurant in Angoulême (at least according to my thorough investigations during nine consecutive years I've been coming here).

The persons taking part in this revelry were: Jonas Darnell, Carl-Michael Edenborg, Anneli Furmark, Fabian Göransson, Joanna Hellgren, Loka Kanarp, Kristiina Kolehmainen, Henrik Lange, Knut Larsson, Thomas Olsson, Matilda Ruta and Josefin Svenske.

As is my habit at these occasions, I sent my camera around, asking everyone to take a few photos from their perspectives, and here are the results of this collective documentation.

The second day of the festival is over, and it has been a hectic and very successful day for the Swedish delegation. I started out by giving a talk about the Swedish comics history at the beautiful Conservatoire, with the help of Maria Riedelberg Lemoine from the Swedish Institute, who translated everything into French.

The interest for this somewhat academic talk was great, the lecture hall was full to the last seat and the audience was very interested, asking many really good questions at the end.

After the talk, we had to go directly to Espace Franquin, to take part in a panel discussion on Swedish comics. On stage were yours truly, curator Josefin Svenske, publisher Johannes Klenell and artists Joanna Hellgren and Anneli Furmark.

Leading the debate was Gaëtan Akyuz, who asked about the history of Swedish comics, about the exhibition and so on. The debate did not get started for real until the question of the difference between the French and Swedish comics culture came up. Of course we ended up talking about the fact that there is a much larger percentage of female artists in Swedish comics culture.

This led to a debate about the percieved sexism in many French mainstream comics, provoking persons in the audience to question the dangers of applying a "politically correct" view in the creation of comics. A really interesting debate, that I think said a lot about the differences between French and Swedish comics.

Live: Angoulême - Inauguration Ceremony

Yesterday evening we were part of the VERY official inauguration ceremony at the grand Theatre building, with all the other dignitairies. Above can be seen the president of this year's festival, Art Spiegelman (Maus) with his wife Francoise Mouly (Raw, Little Lit) as well as Joe Sacco (Palestine) and Charles Burns (Black Hole).

I was the representative of the Swedish group and was interviewed on stage about Swedish comics in general and the, from a French perspective quite obviously fascinating, fact that there are a so many female artists working with comics in Sweden. This was all a bit intimidating but also exilerating to get to promote Swedish comics culture at the highest possible level.

After the interview, the festival honoured Kristiina Kolehmainen, who has been the foremost representative for Swedish comics at the festival for almost 20 years, and who is directly responsible for there actually being a Swedish exhibition. This was a very moving event for all of us who know Kristiina, but sadly she was not present herself to hear it.

Today was the first day of the festival and everything has worked out great. The Swedish exhibition is up and running, we have had a steady flow of visitors all day and a lot of interest from media.

The exhibition is made up of a number of panoramas in sturdy cardboard, with free-standing characters in front of them, creating the illusion of small paper theatres blown up to human size. The artists featured are as follows:

Besides this we also display a lot of framed originals from the participating artists.

In one end of the exhibition hall, we project the animated version of Joanna Rubin Dranger's Miss Remarkable and her Career on a wall for the visitors to sit down and watch, which many do all the way through even though it's more than 30 minutes long.

Then we have an artist's work place where Swedish artists can sit and draw, something that always catches the visitors' attention. Above can be seen Jonas Darnell, captivating the audience while drawing a Strindberg version of his character Herman Hedning.

At three o' clock in the afternoon we had the official opening, with the obligatory pompous inauguration talk by me and Josefin, red wine for everyone and afterwards a relaxed mingle with colleagues and visitors from all over the world.

Now it's time to close for the day and go and take part in the very official opening ceremony, where we will talk about Swedish comics in front of all the VIP:s of the festival. It'll get back to you with more details as soon as I get a chance to sit down and write again.

So, here we are, building a Swedish comics exhibition in Angoulême, France - to be featured at one of the largest comics festivals in the world.

It's been really hard work for quite a long time, but now we're actually on the finishing line. Today has been rather difficult, with many setbacks, but also very rewarding with great team-work. Me and Josefin arrived yesterday and have spent the whole day building and have one by one been joined by the Swedish artist, and everyone has joined in.

We have framed originals - quite often actually not breaking the glass, hammered nails straight and crooked into walls, climbed on ridiculously high ladders and adjusted the lighting and so on. And miraculously, as it always does, out of this chaos came a really good exhibition.

Tomorrow is the grand opening and we are now ready for the onslaught of our adoring public. More reports to follow.

News: Sweden Goes to Angoulême!

It's getting close to the launch of the biggest comics festival in Europe, Festival International de la Bande Dessinée, in Angoulême, France. This year there will be a special focus on Sweden, as there is a special exhibition, La vie n’est pas pour les amateurs – Strindberg et la bande dessinée (Life is not for Amateurs - Strindberg and Comics), an exhibition produced by yours truly and curated by Josefin Svenske, celebrating the 100th year since the death of the much talked about Swedish author August Strindberg. This marks the first time for a major Swedish exhibition in Angoulême, and it is acompanied by a Swedish booth in the Nouvo Monde tent, where Swedish publishers and artists show their books to the general public.

I'm travelling to France today, to oversee the final building of the exhibition, and then the fun begins. On Thursday, there is an official on-stage presentation of the exhibition; on Friday I will give a talk on Swedish Comics History and there will be a big panel discussion with several representatives of the Swedish comics culture. Then there's going to be a big release party for the brand new French anthology Rayon Frais, collecting the best of the new generation of Swedish comics artists, published in collaboration between Swedish Galago and French les Requins Marteaux, and much, much more.

As you can tell, this is going to be intense, and hopefully we will further the position of Swedish comics in the French-speaking world. I will report here continuously throughout the whole festival, keeping you posted on what's happening.

Review: 1001 Comics You Must Read Before You Die

There's a new book on comics out, to which I have contributed. The title of the book really says it all: 1001 Comics You Must Read Before You Die: The Ultimate Guide to Comic Books, Graphic Novels, Comic Strips and Manga. This gigantic tome (960 pages!) was edited by friend and fellow comics historian Paul Gravett. Gravett did the impossible job of trying to include all comics cultures of the world, and not just the Anglosaxon ones - which is otherwise sadly often the norm in encyclopedical efforts of this kind (or only French comics, if it were written in France).

So far, the book is out in two different editions, one British and one American. As could be expected, the British one is fronted by Judge Dredd and the American one by Captain America. If there is a French edition I suspect it will sport Tintin on the cover...

All jokes aside, this is an interesting book, and not only because I was inloved in the making of it... The 1001 comics mentioned come from almost 40 different countries and are presented chronologically, with the oldest one from 1837 (The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck by Töpffer) and the newest one from 2011 (Habibi by Craig Thompson). This makes browsing the book feel like a quick guide to the evolution of the comics medium.

Gravett took the process of choosing the comics very seriously (see here for a description of the process) and had experts from all over the world help nominate comics for inclusion. My job was, of course, to nominate Swedish comics. This was an interesting but difficult task, as I wanted as broad a selection as possible at the same time as the slots for Swedish comics were limited. And the books also had to have been published in English... In the end, I managed to get seven books included:

Adamson’s Adventures by Oscar Jacobsson (1920)
Socker-Conny by Joakim Pirinen (1985)
Rocky by Martin Kellerman (1999)
Miss Remarkable & Her Career by Joanna Rubin Dranger (2001)

Bosnian Flat Dog by Max Andersson and Lars Sjunnesson (2004)
Frances by Joanna Hellgren (2008)

I also wrote the entries for these books and a few more scattered throughout the book.

All in all, this is a really solid book (both for its hefty volume and for its intent), a serious effort to create a canon of comics masterpeices. For someone like me, who have read vast amounts of comics from all over the world, it still contains comics I've never heard of. So, I'll keep this book around for browsing and getting inspired for a long time.

Jewish Images in the Comics: The Lecture

New book and big international exhibition

Phew! The last couple of months have not seen many updates here, due to the autumn having been even busier than usual. Now it is starting to look a bit better. A few days ago I delivered my new book, Jewish Images in the Comics - A Visual History, to my American publisher Fantagraphics Books. That was a load off my mind, I can tell you. It will be much longer than any of the earlier books in this series (Black Images in the Comics and Comics Go to Hell) and contain almost 150 different comics featuring Jewish culture in some way or other. As usual I have spread the examples historically, geographically and chosen them from different genres, publishing formats and so on, in order to make the book as broad and as interesting as possible. I'm really looking forward to the book release at MoCCA in New York in April this year.

Then there's the Swedish exhibition in Angoulême, France, which I am producing together with Josefin Svenske. This will be the first major Swedish exhibition in Europe's biggest and most important comics festival, and this has been a lot of work. The exhibition will focus in the world famous Swedish author August Strindberg - who died 100 years ago this year - and feature huge panoramas on the subject of Strindberg, created by some of the most interesting Swedish comics artist working today. The festival is getting closer (it's on between the 26 and 29 of this month) and there are still a lot of things left to do, but I can at least see the end of this too. More on this as we get closer to the exhibition.

Season's greetings, drawn by my wife, Hanna Strömberg. As I am an old Asterix fan, it was an enjoyable experince being converted into an indominable gaul. I can just see us, living in one of the houses in the Asterix village.
